Our Stay in Sand & Sandals Desaru Beach Resort

For our recent Desaru trip, we stayed for a night at the newly revamped Sand & Sandals Desaru Beach Resort & Spa. Formerly known as Pulai Desaru Beach Resort and Spa, it was re-opened early last year after a major facelift.

The check-in was fast and we managed to get a room before 3pm. The resort has as many as 9 different types of rooms. We chose to stay in a Deluxe Garden View Room, which is also facing the resort pool albeit not directly. This room type is the second cheapest available at S$196 a night, checking-in on a Sunday. Yet it looks as good and spacious as this. A double four poster bed in the middle of the 55 sq.m room with a sofa and coffee table.

The room includes the usual flat-screen TV, rain shower and tea/coffee making facilities. The bathtub in the balcony is an unusual touch. For a family with children staying, it’ll just be the children using (if at all), so to me it’s not really a practical design.

DL was keen to try beach fishing. The rate is RM30 for 3 hours. However, the Sea was rough and beach warning flag was red signaling high hazard so no sea sport was available. Only ATV (all-terrain vehicle) ride was available. Do note the rate for a 20-min ride is RM100 as compared to RM65 for a double at Desaru Fruit Farm but i am not sure how scenic is the route.

The resort is alongside the beach with sun loungers strategically placed for guests to enjoy the sea breeze.

The resort pool is small as compared to neighbouring Lotus Desaru Beach Resort but CL had fun going down the slide again and again.

We spent a fair bit of time in the Games Room. Each game is priced at RM2 to RM3. The kids particularly enjoyed this game – Extreme Snowboard and we spent a small fortune on it.

There are 6 dining outlets in the resort. We had our late lunch in Spice & Herbs, which serves Asian and Western cuisine. We had sandwiches, hot dog buns and macaroni with cheese, which took quite a while to be served.

The kids ordered room service for supper. The kids meals were priced at RM15 each and came in this colourful basket. We noticed that the prices of the 24-hours room service menu differs from the dine-in price at Spices & Herbs by around RM3, which is still reasonable considering it is round-the-clock service.

Breakfast was included in our room rates and we had a hearty meal with Continental and local food choices. Do save some room in your stomach for their yummy nasi lemak with sambal, ikan bilis (anchovies) and fried peanuts.

For our one-night stay, I think that is room for improvement in terms of cleanliness in room. But overall the resort offers a good value for money.
